I remember watching Fight Club for the first time, and immediately loving this song. I’m hesitant to revisit the movie, but the song holds up.
Frank Black described the inspiration for the lyrics like this:
That came from me snorkeling in the Caribbean and having this very small fish trying to chase me. I don't know why - I don't know too much about fish behavior.
He may not know as much about fish behavior as the rest of us, but he know how to make a riff. The riff plus Kim Deal’s chanting is the song. The song sounds very Nirvana-like in some parts, with its listenable proto-grunge style and starts-stop dynamics.
Frank Black also said that he may not have finished his song, if his wife Jean had not popped her head in and said “Finish that song, that's a good one”. She never said that to him before or since. That is an quite a hit rate of song quality noticing by Jean. Imagine the sensation if the Blacks are visiting you, and you happen to be playing something you are working on, and Jean says “thats’ a good one”.
Not much more to say about this one. At least you were spared my elaborate theory of how the Pixies song Hey is about the David Lynch film Eraserhead.
