There is a long on-going discussion about when Weezer “lost it”. It was even featured in an SNL sketch. Was it in the hiatus after Pinkerton? Or did they never lose it? In my opinion they definitely lost it. I would take any of the top 5 songs on the Blue Album, over any song released after 2010. I would say that the specific point at which they lost it is from the 5th track of 2009s Raditude. (“From here, it’s clear, that I’m not getting better”)
But this song is before that! The drummer has said that he “thinks of it as classic Weezer”. It hits us with a wailing guitar right from the start, and has a great, big chorus. And you can feel the song. Probably most guys who have been single for longer periods can.
There's the pitch, slow and straight
All I have to do is swing and I'm a hero
But I'm a zero
It’s a song about the hardness of being shy and meeting women. You’re there, a cute girl is there. You have it good. If you get to talk to her, it will almost certainly be a pleasant interaction, and there is a decent chance she will like you. But you just pass through.
When you arrive in hell, you get a bar of white chocolate and a list of all the girls who would’ve slept with you.
Rivers Cuomo has said of the song:
I sincerely hope that it's the last song I write about being frustrated and angry with myself for being shy, because I've written way too many of those songs already.
It was not.
Tell me there's some hope for me
I don't wanna be lonely
For the rest of my days on the earth
